Other times it's groovy as hell. It is in the same vein as MoneyGrabber, but not as spiteful. The throwback sound is refreshing and each track will give you the desire to dance and sing along. Maroon 5's debut album, Songs About Jane, and this album are eerily similar in their structure. I immediately picked up the album and listed to it over and over.
A few weeks after I picked up the album they came through town and I had a chance to see the live. Then my body started moving back and forth. I downloaded Pickin' Up the Pieces a few weeks ago, and continue to repeatedly go back to it for another listen. Just like their previous releases. All I could hear was the chorus, and found it refreshingly funny. With proper, smart lyrics and a rhythm and blues sound, this album is a fun and engaging listen.
See Fitz and the Tantrums on tour this summer! The album only has 10 tracks with a running time a little over 30 minutes, but there are no fillers here. You will love it beginning to end. There is really no track on the album I don't like. Then you come upon MoneyGrabber, the debut single, which boats of spite and hate. So, buy this release, and encourage Fitz and the Tantrums to make more chair dancing, singing in the car, and grooving in the kitchen while cooking music for us all.
Seriously, it makes you want to get up and dance. But as much as it has already been said in most of these reviews, this is the strongest album I have heard in a very long time. Vocals are strong and the band is extremely talented. Well a few days later, I youtube the song, and my Lord, I was hooked. It reminds me of a vintage, 50s-60s kind of sound, but yet it still sounds great today, and I think it always will. My favorite tracks are probably Rich Girls or Winds of Change.
Its also an album you can listen through, not having to skip any tracks to get to a hit. Not the music, not the lyrical content, but the progression. The album isn't bad at all - it's catchy, groovy, and easy to listen to. Their album is excellent, but they're even better live. Now I am going to make another comparison. While flipping French toast, my eyes kept getting distracted and making eye-contact with the mesmerizing music video.
You then arrive at the final track, Tighter. Then the title track with Pickin' Up The Pieces, you have soulful ballad of a man scorned, trying to heal his broken heart. It's not often I find an album where there is not a single song I want to skip over, but this is one of them. I think my personal favorites on this album are Tricky, Roll Up, and Fadeback, but even those songs can't hold a candle to any on their first two albums. It's not too pretentious, its just fun, infectious and it just works.
