A detail which we enjoyed would be the small attention-to-detail touches, such as the black date background which blends in well with the dial. The bracelet is only available in full link increments, and perhaps one complaint might be the lack of half links and micro adjustment features, potentially making the size awkward for certain wrists. This is evidently a lower grade movement that Longines did not put their name on. Longines manual wind movements are some of the best up to the quartz revolution of the 70's. This was in spite of a boom in sales of watches to the soldiers on both sides of the conflict. By 1977, the quartz crisis was in full swing, and Longines countered the challenge with Calibre L990. Why are they using this material? In 1954, the first quartz watch set a precision record at the Neuchâtel Observatory.
High beat 36K movements, regardless of manufacturer, are regulated to good accuracy because they have more increments per second 10 than the average 19. The generous size of the rectangular movement houses a large barrel spring and enables the use of a wide sprung balance, oscillating at a frequency of 36,000 vibrations per hour, for even greater accuracy. As a consequence of this, most Swiss watches imported into Britain until the 1920s were unsigned on the dial and movement, a requirement of British retailers. They were an expensive piece of window dressing that had no effect on the going of the watch, which is why they are only fitted to the visible top holes, the ones the customer sees; the jewels in the bottom holes were rubbed in as usual. A Wittnauer case shouldn't have a Longines movement and vice versa, unless someone has swapped parts.
The rocking bar mechanism is normally held in the winding position by the spring, and is moved into the hand setting position by a push piece, with a pin set in an olivette on the case near to the crown. The history of Longines is traced back to 1832 when Agassiz joined Raiguel because Agassiz created the business that, with his financial support under the control of his nephew, became Longines. It's a good quality, well supported, tried-and tested easily serviceable movement. The subdial at 6 is the chronograph 12-hour totalizer, with the upper half of this subdial cut-out to reveal the moonphase function, which is designed in fair detail in blue and gold. A small quibble, but something to take note of regardless.
It allows you to easily change time zones either manually, following watchmaking tradition, or by using the smart 'Flash Setting' system that sets the watch using flash pulses from a smartphone. Perfect example is bell and Ross. The precision of the work was pushed far enough to allow to remove any prior assembly, parts of the movement, wheels, escapement, winding, meeting only at the time of final reassembly. Like other variations available in this collection, the Conquest V. The only markings are Swiss Made, 18 Jewels, Fast Slow, and 13.
Sporty and elegant, this watch is a must for travel lovers. A complete watch leaving the Longines factory up to the serial number 15,000,000 had the same serial number on the case and on the movement. After that the case and movement number were not necessarily the same. A collection that remains faithful to the Longines values: tradition, elegance, quality and accuracy. Lug width is 21mm, case thickness is 14.
There was a point a few years back when, being the underdog champion that I mostly like to be, I was hoping that Longines was going to get their act together. The difference lies in how the energy is derived - automatic watches are powered by the natural motion of the wearers wrist. Many pocket watches of this age have had their bows replaced because of wear from the swivel clip. I still think they are both beautiful pieces. This movement does not carry the Longines name, as required by many British retailers. Became Longines, named after those long meadows where the new factory was located.
The Conquest Chronograph by Mikaela Shiffrin reflects my sporting character without compromising its feminine styling. Since its creation, quartz movement has gone on to dominate the fashion watch world with its exceptional accuracy and easy-to-maintain nature. All Ball did, if they even did much of this, was some finishing and adjusting. Its just not my cup of tea-so to speak. Ultra resistant and scratch-resistant, this insert, which matches the colour of the dial, ties together the fully modernized design and sporty silhouette of this collection. Longines asks artist Serge Manzon to create a line of watches notably different from its classic collections. Agassiz approved of the idea, but pointed out that traditional watchmakers had no experience of mass producing parts by machines.
What is a quartz movement watch? Longines informed me that the watch was invoiced to Baume on 17 February 1911. This is also true for lighter-coloured dial variations. It is one of the oldest registered trademarks for a watchmaker still in existence. I am tired and probably incoherent. They do make a High Grade movement under the name Agassiz Longines. The watch has a key wound and set 15 jewel Longines calibre 19B movement, with right angle lever escapement and club tooth escape wheel. Geneva Exhibition 1896 Longines exhibited at the Swiss National Exhibition in Geneva 1896.
Its grained black dial, topped with domed sapphire crystal, features indexes, Arabic numerals and hands covered in Super LumiNova® to ensure optimal reading of time in line with the demands of the discipline. The new company continued producing both individual brands of watches Longines and Wittnauer and each brand continued to be distinctive. With the help of his younger brother, Albert Wittnauer decided there was a need for a watch designed with all of the durability and function the American public demanded but with local production to help keep costs down. By the time this movement was made the techniques of jewel grinding had advanced and the metal settings were no longer necessary, but they look good and so top of the range movements such as the Longines movement in the picture were fitted with them. It boasts accuracy down to 5 centimetres and features up to 1,000 measurements per second. The watches of the Record collection are available in four sizes 26, 30, 38. It will certainly not happen again.
I don't know if I'd call it another category completely, but I do consider a few of Longines' movements immediately before the 430 series to be much better. Flash Setting is what makes fast and direct time setting possible without using the crown, while providing rigorous precision in displayed time. In 1865 Ernest Francillon told his uncle Auguste Agassiz that he wanted to set up a factory to manufacture watches with extensive use of machinery like in the American factories. All energy collected is then stored in a power-cell, which continuously recharges the watch. Longines produced some really beautiful sport chronograph watches in the 30's and 40's, using Longines own in-house movements. For the same reason the winding wheels, the crown and ratchet wheel, were usually concealed below the barrel bridge, and the screws were blued. I just wanted to chime in to say that trying on a watch to snap a quick wrist shot for your blog seems perfectly fine.
