Got to cam and crank gears, which is the mechanism by which it all works and the pieces are so poorly molded that they barely touch much less mesh together. It also has details like a working fan and accessory pulleys, a distributor with plug wires, a carburetor topped with an air cleaner, and much more! What better way to see how an internal combustion engine works than to be able to see all of the parts move! This is the main problem with this model. The answer was the stupid arrow on the crank points in the wrong direction. This was well worth the money. Still, getting the model to work presented mechanical challenges that were educational in of themselves, and we got through it.
The kit includes a rubber fan belt and vinyl ignition wires. The other model engines by Haynes are much better. The Visible V8 Engine features moving pistons and connecting rods. Now I remember that at 10 years old I made a mess of this model. Additional shipping charges will not apply.
As you turn it, each of the parts moves, just like the real thing. This was a downgrade of the original one. Since the kit was purchased around 1978-79, the exact kit used was most likely the 1977 Revell reissue of the kit which was originally produced by Renwal. All that is built is the crank and pistons. Back then it didn't come with a hand crank. It came with a little battery box and the starter was a little electric motor that actual turne d the whole engine.
I liked putting this model together and recommend it with four stars. Winner of the 2008 Parents Choice Award and Silver Honor 1995 Doing and Learning Toy, it gives children ages 12 years and older a constructive hobby with benefits. There were several issues with blobby, malformed parts that didn't want to work, and I'm sure this model would have been more fun to build with a vintage kit that was made when the dies were fresher. I had a choice of carving out a replacement part from the mold tree reside or repair it with a heated straight pin up the shaft.
